  9. SERIES WITH INTRODUCTION OF LANTASTIC(R) TO 
  10. MACINTOSH(R) SYSTEM
  11. Provides Interoperability Between Macintosh And 
  12. LANtastic Networks
  13.     (TUCSON, AZ -- April 1, 1992) -- Artisoft, Inc. 
  14. announced today that it will begin shipping its 
  15. LANtastic to Macintosh system in the second quarter of 
  16. calendar year 1992. Priced at $799, this system 
  17. provides an unlimited amount of users a transparent 
  18. integration of a Macintosh network and PostScript 
  19. printers into the LANtastic network operating system 
  20. environment, and enables real-time file-sharing 
  21. between both environments.
  22.     "By establishing the LANtastic network's 
  23. interoperability with Macintosh networks, we are 
  24. bringing the two leading peer-to-peer networks 
  25. together for the first time," stated Jack Schoof 
  26. (pronounced "shoaf"), Artisoft President and CEO.
  27.     The LANtastic to Macintosh system establishes a PC 
  28. to serve as a dedicated gateway between the Macintosh 
  29. and LANtastic networks. PC servers on the LANtastic 
  30. network are set up as logical drives on the gateway PC 
  31. and appear as slightly modified Macintosh computer 
  32. icons to users on the Macintosh network. Thus, 
  33. Macintosh users see PC files and directories as they 
  34. would standard Macintosh files and directories and use 
  35. the Chooser to select printers attached to the 
  36. LANtastic network. 
  37.     Slightly different for PC users, the LANtastic to 
  38. Macintosh system establishes a dedicated gateway PC 
  39. where users can access PostScript printers on the 
  40. Macintosh network and where they can see Macintosh 
  41. files which have been saved onto the gateway PC's hard 
  42. drive. PC users can see and access any PostScript 
  43. printer that is attached to the Macintosh network from 
  44. their own LANtastic interface.
  45.     Both sets of users can access the other set's files 
  46. of the same file format (i.e. Microsoft(R) Word and 
  47. Excel or Aldus(R) PageMaker(R)). File attributes and 
  48. record-locking are supported in both directions. In 
  49. addition, any PostScript-compatible printer ù even 
  50. non-AppleTalk(R) interface printers such as Hewlett 
  51. Packard's LaserJet(R) series ù can be shared 
  52. simultaneously between all workstations, both 
  53. Macintosh and PC.
  54.     The LANtastic to Macintosh system uses a Standard 
  55. Macintosh User Interface and maintains all Apple 
  56. security privileges normally available to Macintosh 
  57. users. The gateway PC appears as an AppleShare(R) 
  58. server to the Macintosh user and files are accessed in 
  59. the same fashion as with any other AppleShare server. 
  60. The LANtastic to Macintosh system provides one 
  61. AppleTalk Interface Board (Apple LocalTalk PC board, 
  62. Ethernet, Token Ring) and requires one LANtastic 
  63. workstation with 640K RAM, a LANtastic-compatible 
  64. network adapter, Apple's System 6.0 or greater, and 
  65. DOS 3.3 or greater.
